HiDALGO2 Training for Large-Scale CFD and Multiphysics Simulations
A beginner-friendly training webinar on waLBerla, an open-source, massively parallel framework for large-scale multiphysics simulations, will be organized by the HiDALGO2 Center of Excellence on 12 October 2026.
High-fidelity numerical simulations are increasingly important across engineering and scientific disciplines. However, running such simulations at high fidelity and at scale carries a high computational cost. Many engineers, application scientists, and domain experts may not have access to simulation software that can efficiently exploit modern HPC resources. As a result, computationally demanding simulations can take days to complete, limiting the number and scale of simulations that can realistically be performed.
This creates a growing need for highly scalable simulation software that efficiently uses modern HPC systems. As GPU-accelerated computing becomes more important, simulation frameworks must also effectively exploit GPUs and large heterogeneous computing systems. To bridge this gap, HiDALGO2 will present waLBerla (widely applicable Lattice Boltzmann from Erlangen), an open-source, massively parallel framework for large-scale multiphysics simulations. waLBerla provides the computational infrastructure needed to develop highly scalable simulation applications for a broad range of problems, including:
- Complex fluid-flow simulations
- Multiphysics simulations
- Particle-laden flows
- Thermal and heat-transfer problems
- Large-scale CPU- and GPU-based simulations
The webinar is intended for beginners and participants with little or no prior experience with waLBerla. It will be useful for application developers, domain scientists, engineers, CFD and multiphysics researchers, researchers interested in particle-laden flows and heat transfer, scientists interested in large-scale numerical simulations, and other users interested in leveraging modern HPC and GPU systems for computationally demanding simulations.
